How often should a chimney be inspected?+
Every year, even if you only burn a few fires. The NFPA and CSIA both recommend annual Level-1 inspections.
How often should I clean my dryer vent?+
Once a year for a typical Houston household. Every 6 months if you run the dryer daily or have pets.
How much creosote is dangerous?+
Anything past 1/8 inch should be cleaned. Past 1/4 inch is a chimney-fire hazard. Glazed creosote (hard, shiny) requires chemical treatment, not just brushing.
Why do I need a chimney cap?+
Three reasons: keeps water out (stops crown damage and flue deterioration), keeps animals out, and stops sparks from landing on the roof. A $300 cap saves thousands in damage.
Can I clean my dryer vent myself?+
The first 4–6 feet, yes. Past that — especially roof-vented homes — you need a rotary brush kit and the know-how not to punch a hole through the vent. Most 'DIY' calls we get are to repair those holes.
